Anne Smythe was born about 1516 in Attercliffe, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
Anne married Richard Fenton (born in 1495 in York, Yorkshire) in 1531 in West Riding, Yorkshire. She was Richard's second wife; his first wife Cecelia is mentioned in his will, and he had daughters by both wives.
Their daughter was Anne Fenton (1528–1628). Note, this is 3 years before the marriage. Anne may belong to Richard's first wife Cecilia.
Anne is mentioned in the will of her father Laurence Smythe of Attercliffe dated 12 April 1548 and proved 16th April 1551: "Testator gave to the five daughters of Richarde Fenton his son-in-law, viz., Dorothie, Elizabeth, Marie, Anne, and Katerine "everie of them" £6 . 13 . 4 to be paid by Hughe testator's son ... to Annie testator's daughter all his "stocke of malte and barlie with the greate chiste in the chamber". She is also mentioned in the will of her husband Richard Fenton, 2 January 1550, of which she was an executor with son Richard. This will also mentions a first wife Cecilia and her daughters (unnamed).[1]
Anne died on May 18, 1552, aged 35.
Anne is on several thousand Ancestry trees. Some give a baptism 4 April 1515 at Barnsley with an Ancestry source, but this is actually a burial for Janne daughter of Charles Smythe, and the year is 1575 - most of the register pages for 1575 appear to have been filed as 1515 on Ancestry.[2] Parish registers began in 1537 in England and there are no surviving Barnsley registers before 1568.
There is a Find a Grave entry saying Anne is buried at Sheffield Cathedral but no supporting information on it.[3] Sheffield parish registers begin in 1560.
