Biography

John Smith, Brewer of Southwark, Surrey

The parents of John Smith are unknown.

His year of birth is unknown. It appears that his eldest surviving son James was born c 1570 and hence John is presumed to have been born c 1540-1550.

The arms of this Smith family were recorded in the James pedigree in Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica[1] as: "Sable, a rose or"

John Smith, Brewer, was an Overseer of the will of Roger James, Brewer of London, the will made on 19 Jun 1589, signed and sealed on 20 Apr 1590, and proved on 13 Mar 1591/1592.[2] Roger James was the father of three sons who married three daughters of John Smith.

Marriage

The name of his wife is unknown.

Many family trees on the internet link him with a Rose Goddard, but without specific evidence.

There was a John Smithe who married a Rose Goddard on 13 Sep 1568 at Merrow, Surrey.[3] However, whether this was John Smith of Southwark, Surrey, Brewer, is unknown.

NB A Smyth pedigree in the Visitation of Surrey recorded that John Smyth of Merrow, son of Anthony Smith of Merrow, married Rose, daughter of Stevens of Horsley, Surrey.[4] The sons of John Smyth of Merrow were Anthony and Richard.

Children

Three of his daughters, namely Sarah, Gertrude and Audrey, married three brothers of the James family of London, also a brewing family.[1]

Sarah, daughter of John Smith of London, Merchant, married Roger James of London and Upminster Hall, Essex, eldest son of Roger James and Sarah Morskyn.[1] "Roger Jeams of East Smithfield & Sarah Smithe, spinster, daughter of John Smithe of St Saviours, Southwark, Brewer", were married by General Licence dated 24 Jun 1588.[5] Roger died in 1596 and Sarah married secondly Thomas Cleyborne in 1598 at St Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex.[6]

Gertrude, daughter of John Smith of London and Southwark married Richard James 6th son of Roger James and Sarah Morskyn.[1] The marriage took place on 12 Jun 1599 at Stepney, Middlesex.[7]

Etheldreda [Audrey], daughter of John Smyth of London and Southwark and sister of Gertrude, married George James 7th son of Roger James and Sarah Morskyn.[1]

Children of John Smith:

  • James Smythe (of age in 1591)
  • David Smythe (a minor in 1591)
  • John Smythe (a minor in 1591)
  • Roger Smythe (a minor in 1591)
  • Samuel Smythe (a minor in 1591)
  • Galfyn Smythe (married Richard Turner)
  • Margaret Smythe
  • Sarah Smythe
  • Gertrude Smythe
  • Audrey Smythe

Death and Burial

From his will it apparent that he died at some point between 16 Apr 1591 and 15 Jan 1591/1592.

A likely burial record is that of 'John Smythe' who was buried on 11 Jan 1591/1592 at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey.[8] The record states he was buried 'in ye churche' indicating that the person was someone of status.

Summary of the Will of John Smithe/Smythe 1591/1592

This John Smythe Will was written on April 15, 1591. He was buried at St. Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England on January 11, 1591/92. His burial entry states that he was buried in the church. Although I have no direct evidence that proves that Sara "Rogers" in his will was really Sara James, wife of Roger James, Brewer of London, the circumstantial evidence has convinced me that she was the wife of Roger James so I have concluded that the scribe who wrote John Smythe's Will got mixed up and put in "Rogers" as Sara's. Roger James husband's surname, rather than "James". Sarah Smythe married Roger James on July 1, 1588 at St. Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England. An examination of the St. Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England parish register finds only one Sara Smythe in the baptism records who could logically the Sarah Smythe who married Roger James in 1588 and she was the Sara Smythe, daughter of John Smythe who was baptized on March 22, 1571/72. In addition, the St. Saviour Parish Register does not have an entry for the marriage of Sara Smythe and a man whose surname was Rogers. Also, I found a marriage of John Smythe to an Elizabeth ?Russell? in the St. Saviour, Southwark, Surrey, England parish register on October 5, 1567 which is the right time for the John Smythe who died in 1591 to have married so I would say that the working theory is that his wife's name was Elizabeth.
