John Smith, Brewer of Southwark, Surrey
The parents of John Smith are unknown.
His year of birth is unknown. It appears that his eldest surviving son James was born c 1570 and hence John is presumed to have been born c 1540-1550.
The arms of this Smith family were recorded in the James pedigree in Miscellanea Genealogica et Heraldica[1] as: "Sable, a rose or"
John Smith, Brewer, was an Overseer of the will of Roger James, Brewer of London, the will made on 19 Jun 1589, signed and sealed on 20 Apr 1590, and proved on 13 Mar 1591/1592.[2] Roger James was the father of three sons who married three daughters of John Smith.
The name of his wife is unknown.
Many family trees on the internet link him with a Rose Goddard, but without specific evidence.
There was a John Smithe who married a Rose Goddard on 13 Sep 1568 at Merrow, Surrey.[3] However, whether this was John Smith of Southwark, Surrey, Brewer, is unknown.
NB A Smyth pedigree in the Visitation of Surrey recorded that John Smyth of Merrow, son of Anthony Smith of Merrow, married Rose, daughter of Stevens of Horsley, Surrey.[4] The sons of John Smyth of Merrow were Anthony and Richard.
Three of his daughters, namely Sarah, Gertrude and Audrey, married three brothers of the James family of London, also a brewing family.[1]
Sarah, daughter of John Smith of London, Merchant, married Roger James of London and Upminster Hall, Essex, eldest son of Roger James and Sarah Morskyn.[1] "Roger Jeams of East Smithfield & Sarah Smithe, spinster, daughter of John Smithe of St Saviours, Southwark, Brewer", were married by General Licence dated 24 Jun 1588.[5] Roger died in 1596 and Sarah married secondly Thomas Cleyborne in 1598 at St Dunstan, Stepney, Middlesex.[6]
Gertrude, daughter of John Smith of London and Southwark married Richard James 6th son of Roger James and Sarah Morskyn.[1] The marriage took place on 12 Jun 1599 at Stepney, Middlesex.[7]
Etheldreda [Audrey], daughter of John Smyth of London and Southwark and sister of Gertrude, married George James 7th son of Roger James and Sarah Morskyn.[1]

From his will it apparent that he died at some point between 16 Apr 1591 and 15 Jan 1591/1592.
A likely burial record is that of 'John Smythe' who was buried on 11 Jan 1591/1592 at St Saviour, Southwark, Surrey.[8] The record states he was buried 'in ye churche' indicating that the person was someone of status.
The will of John Smithe/Smythe of St Saviour's Southwark, Surrey, beer brewer, was made on 16 Apr 1591 and proved on 15 Jan 1591/1592.[9][10]
Family members named: James Smythe his son. David, John, Roger, and Samuel Smythe his underage sons (under the age of 24). Gertrude and Audrey Smythe his unmarried daughters. Galfyn Turner his daughter, wife of Richard Turner. Margaret Longe and Sara Rogers his daughters. No other legatees.
Executor: James Smythe his son. Overseers: William Dassett; Edward Candishe; Henry Alison. Witnesses: Henry Alinson, scrivener; Richard Hall his servant; Christopher Croxton; Gilbert Segar.
As his will did not mention a wife it is presumed his wife pre-deceased him.
Was the Sara 'Rogers' noted in the will of John Smith actually Sarah the wife of Roger James.
