Birth

John was born in 1840 the son of Thomas Smith and Elizabeth Millar.^[1]

Residences

English census show that the family lived in the Durham region although his mother was born in Northumberland. Ancestiry Document Viewer: 1851 England Census

Immigration

not on ancestry tree is that John came to Australia from Orange in Ireland with two of his brothers: no clear detail. His father was a coal miner.

John married three times and was widowed twice. He married Susannah Lee 1846–1873 in Victoria in 1864. ^[2] Children included:

after Susannah passed John married for a second time to Jane Denham 1851–1883 in Victoria in 1875.^[3]
