Biography

John was born in County Down, Ireland during 1842. He was the son of John Smyth & Agnes McClune. John (jnr) emigrated to New Zealand and at one point was a hotel-keeper in Courtenay, Canterbury. He married Hannah Dark in 1884 and they had a son, Edwin John Smyth, who was born on 25 Feb 1886 but who passed away on 5 Dec 1886. John himself passed away in Christchurch on 30 Nov 1890 and was buried on 2 Dec 1890.
