Biography

Anna was born in 1852. She was the daughter of Charles Smyth and Arabella Jackson. Anna married Nigel Charles Herring on 25 May, 1875 at St. John's Church, Toorak. MARRIAGES. HERRING-SMYTH.-On the 25th inst., at St. John's Church, Toorak, by the Rev. J. E. Bromby, D.D., Nigel Charles, second son of Joseph Herring, Adelaide, to Anna Letitia, eldest daughter of Charles A. Smyth, barrister-at-law, Williams-road, Toorak. The Argus Melbourne, Vic. Mon 31 May, 1875 page 1 Family Notices [1] Nigel died in Adelaide on 23 Sep 1893. Anna married David Graham McCrea on 13 Oct 1896 at Alma-road Presbyterian Church, St. Kilda. MARRIAGES McCREA-HERRING.-On the 13th October at Alma-road Presbyterian Church, St. Kilda, by the Rev. S. Robinson, D.D., David Graham McCrea, minister of Caulfield Presbyterian Church, to Anna, widow of the late Nigel C. Herring, Adelaide, and daughter of C. A. Smyth, Esq., barrister-at-law, Melbourne. The Argus Melbourne, Vic. Sat 31 Oct 1896 Page 1 Family Notices [2] Anna died in 1939. Obituary. Mrs. Anna L. McCrea. Mrs Anna Letitia McCrea, who died at Vermont on Tuesday, was the widow of the late Rev. David Graham McCrea, and the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Charles Alexander Smyth, K.C., the first Crown Prosecutor in Victoria. She arrived from Ireland with her parents in 1858, at the age of six years, and had been in Australia for more than 80 years. She was married before, her first husband having been the late Mr. Nigel C. Herring, for many years manager of the A.M.P. Society in Hobart and Adelaide. A family of five sons and two daughters survive Mrs. McCrea. Her eldest son is Archdeacon N. Herring, of Bendigo, and another, the Rev. J. C. Herring, until recently was Archdeacon of Geelong and vicar of St. Columba's Hawthorn. Three other sons served in the Great War. Her older daughter is Mrs. A. C. Drury, of Hawthorn, and her younger daughter, Miss Margery Herring, was for some years Principal of Janet Clarke Hall, at the University of Melbourne.
