  • OBITUARY.
  • Mr Philip Joseph Smyth, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the Williams River district, died recently. Deceased was a native of Druraghra in the County Tyrone, Ireland, where he was born in the year 1833. He came to Australia with his parents, when two years of age, the family settling down at Melbee Dungog. Later they removed to Clonmore on the Brookfield-road, five miles from Dungog. Here the late Mr Smyth lived the most of his life, his parents dying in the old home, In those early days the lot of the settlers was hard, but he battled on, with indomitable courage and won in life's race. He was 84 years and was twice married He leaves a widow and three step-daughters and one step-son, viz., Mrs. Albert Ward (Wiragulla); Mrs. George Hicks (Dungog); Mrs. A. Pike (Waratah), and Mr. James Leonard (Wiragulla). During the past 30 years the health of deceased had been bad , and he was almost a cripple. He died as the result of a paralytic stroke. His remains were laid to rest in the Roman Catholic cemetery at Dungog, the Rev. Father Bourke officiating.

  • Dear Mrs
  • I apologise for the delay in responding to your enquiry, my Cemeteries Registrar has had the enquiry for some time and has been waiting for someone to go to the cemetery to have a look at the unmarked grave in question.
  • Unfortunately we have found that whilst the grave is shown on our cemetery plan, there is no name entered to it. This is not uncommon in many of our cemeteries. The Dungog Cemetery as you advised was previously called the Hanley’s Creek Cemetery and was operated by the Anglican church until Council took it over in the 1970s. Records either relied on local church parish records which were incomplete and also the existence of markers, headstones to verify the actual locations of the graves.
  • In respect to the above, the records that we hold confirm that Phillip Joseph and Margaret Ann Smith are buried in the Cemetery but there is no reference to the location.
  • We cannot find a record for Ellen Ward or Gertrude Ward.
  • Apologies that I cannot assist further.
