Descendants of Richard and Martha Coleman

According to David Corlew, Charles was born in Hanover Co., VA. -According to the book "Flat Creek: Its Land and Its People" comp. by Ennis C. Wallace Sr. and other, pub 1986 Columbia, TN, Charles Smithson was born about 1747 in Louisa Co. VA. -May 1767 Lunenburg Court p 65 or 66 shows Presentments before the Grand Jury included Menoah Smithson for swearing two oaths and Charles Smithson for swearing two oaths, and the Sheriff was ordered to summon them the next court to answer the said Presentments. -10 March 1768 in Cumberland Parish, Lunenburg Co. VA, the Processioning returns by Nathaniel Mason and Frederick Brown included "...Francis Smithson's and Robt. Esteses in presence of John Glenn and Charles Smithson.....also James and Thomas Shelbornes in presence of Benjamin Tatum....". The returns on same day by Robert Bailie and John Smithson included "...between Richard Coleman and John Scott, in presence of William Smithson, between Richard Coleman and Robert Scott in presence of Ben Burchit...between Richard Coleman and Matthew Brooks in presence of Ben Burchit, between Richard Coleman and henry Pollard in presence of William Smithson....between Francis Smithson and Nat. Mason in presence of John Brown... " This shows that both Shelburne and Coleman families lived in the neighborhood of the Smithsons as early as 1768, and that Charles seems to have been an adult by that time. -Jun 1769 Lunenburg Court p ? lists many suits of The King against individuals dismissed, including against Micajah and Charles Smithson (their Presentments to the Grand Jury in May 1767 for swearing?) -12 Jun 1772 Francis Smithson deeded 200 acres to son Charles Smithson, both of Lunenburg Co., for 100 pounds, land which was part of patent 10 Apr 1751, adjoining Nathaniel Mason and William Smithson. Witnesses were Robert Estes Jr., John Cunningham, Thos. Edwards, Benjamin Clark, and Ellison Ellis. On the same day Francis also deeded to son John, son Manoah, and son William, with same witnesses. (Lunenburg Co. VA Deed Bk 12 p 145) -12 Jan 1779 (Lunenburg Co. VA Deed Bk 13, p 180) Richard Dunston sold 100 acres for 100 pounds to Charles Smithson "where Petersfield meeting house stands, Kitts Crk, adj. Chs. Smithson, Johnson's road, Chs. Hudson, Tatom, John Lester." Recorded 14 Jan 1779. -Mecklenburg Co. VA Order Book 5, p 213a dated Sept 9, 1782, states that Richard Coleman and Martha his wife and Charles Smithson and Lucy his wife and William Gordon are defendants in a case where James Sandefer and Martha Vicars his wife and Ray Moss and Jane his wife are the plaintiffs. I have not yet located the original case description. (Lucy, Martha Vicars and Jane were all children of Richard and Martha Coleman; William Gordon was the trustee for a deed of property made by Richard Coleman in 1760 in which he named these three daughters) -1782 Lunenburg Co. VA Land Tax Book p 10 shows these Smithsons: William with 223 acres; John with 223 acres; Francis with 200 acres; Charles with 300 acres; Menoah and Barttelot with 200 acres each. -1783 List of Tithes in Lunenburg Co. VA includes Charles Smithson with 6 tythes, 3 whites. -1787, 1788, 1789 Lunenburg Co. VA Land Tax Book p 14A shows William with 223; John's estate with 223; Francis with 200; Charles with 300; Manoah and Bartley with 200 each. -1787 Taxable Property Schedule A lists Charles with no while males 16-21, 1 Black over 16, 4 Blacks under 16, 3 horses and 10 cattle. -1790 Lunenburg Co. VA Land Tax Book p 13B shows two entries for Charles Smithson--the usual 300 acres, and another for 140 "from Edward Brown". Does this mean there are two Charles Smithsons, or that the one has two pieces of property? 1800 Virginia census is missing. After 1810, we don't see Charles Sr. in the county records, but reference is made to the land of Lucy Smithson, so my thinking is that he died about 1810. The only Charles Smithson in the 1810 Lunenburg Co. VA census, p 339, is in the 26-45 age range, making him too young to be this Charles. Charles and wife Lucy Smithson sold 150 acres "where Wm. Smithson lives this year" for 90 pounds to Christopher Smithson 25 Aug 1801, witnessed by Charles Brydie, Jos. Yarbrough, Meriwether Hurt, Walton Knight. (LDB 19 p 9) Charles and wife Lucy Smithson sold 30 acres for 30 pounds to Lewis Smithson 13 Feb 1805, witnessed by Bryant Lester Jr., Jno. Smithson and Chr. T. Smithson. (LDB 20 p 74) Charles and wife Lucy Smithson sold 329 acres for 469 pounds to Christopher T. Smithson and John Wood 10 Dec 1805, witnessed by James McClurg, William Smithson, Starlin Smithson, Lew Smithson, and Thomas Blankenship. (LDB 20 p 149)
