Biography

Sarah was born on August 5, 1925 at Robbins in Scott County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Edward Smithers and Florence ( Biby ) Smithers. She married Leon Newport on December 25, 1942 in Scott County. Sarah passed away on November 30, 2015 at home in Oneida, Scott County.

Sarah Lou Smithers Newport, 90, of Oneida passed away Monday, November 30, 2015, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Ed and Florence Biby Smithers. She was a member of the Landmark Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Newport; sisters, Mary Chitwood, Mae Lawson, Versie Muse, Sue Bowling and Zilpha Seber; brothers, Willie and wife Thelma Smithers, James Smithers, Gene Smithers, and special son-in-law, Stanley Jay Gordon, Jr. Survivors include her children, Don and wife Betty Newport of Maryville; Beulah and husband Glenn Young of Robbins; Wanda Dunlap of Oneida; Denny and wife Marcy Newport of Punta Gorda, FL, and Shirley Gordon of Louisville, KY; 10 grandchildren: Donna and Nathanial Sequoyah; Zena Newport, Jessica Bowman, Allen and Cathy Young; Angie and Jeff Spurgeon; Brent and Christy Dunlap; Blake and Sarah Dunlap; Sean and Christa Newport; and Beth and Mark Robertson; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Cora and husband Barney Moffett; brothers, Howard Smithers, Gleason Smithers, Ray Smithers, and Daniel Smithers; special friend, Linda Foster; and a host of special nieces and nephews and a multitude of family and friends. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, December 2 at 8 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Oneida with Dr. Doug White officiating. Music was provided by the First Baptist Church Choir. Interment was held Thursday, December 3 at 11 A.M. in the Black Creek Crossroads Cemetery. Pallbearers were her grandsons. You may sign the online guest book at www.westmurleyfh.net.
