This biography is written with the only certain information that proves Abel is the child of Joseph Smitherman and Mattie Hodges. It is uncertain if this Abel Smitherman is the same person who is the father of R.L. Smitherman. See research notes for more information. The all uncertain sources are listed in the sources section.

Research Notes

We know from the 1880 census^[1] that Joseph Smitherman and Hettie Hodges had a some named Abel. It's also been proven that R.L. Smitherman had a father named Abel Smitherman. Most researches believe these are the same Abel's. They were for sure born in Texas at around the same time. The only reason, they could be different Abel's is because on this death certificate, Abel's birth mother's maiden name is "Jones" (birth certificate filled out by R.L. Smitherman). There is no record of Joseph Smitherman being married to a women with a last name Jones. However, there are records of Abel marrying a women with the last name Jones. It could be the last name was listed as Jones by mistake.
