The inspector of the NSPCC had visited the house after a complaint by a neighbour and found that the child had bruises on several parts of her body. The defendant had asked his daughter to wake him early but she had forgotten and he lost his temper. The child's testimony bore-out the testimony of the father and under cross-examination, she said it was the first time he had been excessive. The defendant had three children and their mother had left a year or two previously. He worked as a carter and had to get up early in the morning. The bench considered the case to be a very brutal one but given the difficulties of his home life and previous good character, they adjourned the case for 6 months, so that the NSPCC inspecter might put the case under observation.
