James Smith Jr was likely born about 1795 in Granville County, North Carolina. He was the son of Amy Pomfret and James Smith.

He married Harriet Wilson Pulliam on 11 July 1822 in Granville County.

Rev. James Smith Jr passed away on 21 October 1833 at the residence of "H. G. Bennitt, Esq" in Knox County, Tennessee. (Note: He was likely buried in Granville County.)
