Information on F.E. Smith found in Booklet 6 in Heritage Center, Prattville. Listed in 1860 & -70 Autauga Co census in household 679 as age 35 and a master mechanic. Much more info furnished by his grand daughter's research (mailed to me by Rosalyn Rogers Wilson). F.E. was called Ferd by his family and F. E. when he came South. Was the 3rd son of Daniel and Hannah Smith. His early life was spent on the farm which had grown to 70 acres. He attended school in Brentwood and Exeter. When his father died in 1845, Ferd was 21. His brother, Daniel, was the farmer in the family and his mother turned over the farm management to Daniel. This gave son, Ferd, a chance to seek employment elsewhere. No doubt he felt he could be more help to his family by sending money home (which he did regularly, as we see from his Journal.) Played the oboe. The Smith Sons' Gin and Machine Co. gins were constructed under the patents of F. E. Smith His sons were officers in the company. (see notes under Arthur W. Smith) Returned to NH each summer with his wife, "Mannie".
