My Dad was diagnosed as having type-1 diabetes at the age of 11, I remember his daily ritual of testing his blood sugar levels and injecting insulin.

Quite often when he was late coming home I would go out to look for him along the route he took from work, to find him slumped on the side of the road in a hypo-glaucomic coma from lack of sugar due to working too hard.
