Biography
I am the youngest daughter of Malcolm Kinmonth Smith Jr and Lloyd Pierce. My sister is Cynthia Lloyd Smith, who died in 2021. I spent my early childhood in Connecticut, New York State, Vermont, Rhode Island. My parents separated in 1957 and in 1961 I moved with my mother to England where I attended Dartington Hall school.
I studied in Paris, worked briefly for UNESCO, worked in Spain, Holland and Greece and obtained a BA, MA and PhD at the University of Essex. I’ve taught at the University of Essex, Plymouth University, Colgate University and the Open University. I’ve published six books and various articles and essays.
I have one daughter, Emily Anne Gittins Lezzeri, born in 1972, and two grandchildren. I’m married to Jonathan Waley, my third husband. We live in East Devon.
