Biography

FATHER AND SON

Charles Winfield Smith died at his residence in Pawnee at 6:20 am on October 29. Five hours previous his youngest son, Russell Winfield, died. Spanish influenza was the cause in each case. Mr Smith had been ill seven days.

Mr Smith was born in Oliver township August 19, 1871. His parents were Jacob and Rebecca Anna Smith. July 1, 1893, he was married in Brookville to Miss Margaret A Hutchins, Pinecreek. They had lived at Pawnee only about a year; prior to that they had lived for seven years at Stanton. Formerly, Mr Smith was a farmer but at the time of his death was a miner for the Pawnee Coal Company, having entered the employ of that concern some time ago.

Mr and Mrs Smith were the parents of eleven children, eight of whom, with their mother, survive. Russell Winfield who died just before his father, was born April 15, 1915.

The surviving children are William, Earl, John, Myrtle and Merle, at home; Mabel, widow of Roy F Smith; Hazel, wife of Wilbert F Miller, Brookville RD 3 and Fred P, Pawnee. Three grandchildren also survive.

Mr Smith's father survives, with the following brothers and sisters: Daniel, Worthville; Alvin, Newton Mills; Adam, Baxter; Samuel, near Stanton; Gle, in US Navy; Clifton, at home; Mrs D W Hoffman, Mudlick; Mrs Alvin Hofman, Mary, wife of Z A Miller; Alice, wife of M J Kessler, Rossiter, and Minnie, wife of Aney McLoughlin, Summerville.

Father and son both were interred at Worthville. ______________
