When Lassly Edwin Smith was born on June 19, 1903[1], in St Helena, California, his father, Franklin Smith, was 27 and his mother, Carrie McCormick, was 29. He married Jane Mouser on June 30, 1923[2], in San Rafael, California, by whom he had two daughters and one son. He and Jane were divorced; he then married Betty Jean Arnold on August 5, 1950[3], in Santa Barbara, California, by whom he had one son. He died on October 29, 1983[4][5], in Redwood City, California, at the age of 80, and was buried[6] in his hometown. (From Ancestry.com machine-composed "LifeStory," with some details added from personal recollection.[7])
Regarding the spelling of his first name: it was supposed to have been “Lasley” (as in his great-grandmother Elizabeth Lasley), but his mother was unable to spell it when he was born, so guessed at the spelling, and so it was.[8])
When Lassly applied for Social Security retirement benefits at age 65, he was initially denied for lack of a birth certificate. He was eventually located in the 1910 census, and thereby qualified.[8]
