John was born in 1844 to John Christopher Smith (1805–1863) and Cynthia Ann Lee Smith (1811–1905). He is listed with his parents and eight siblings on the 1850 Census.[1] On June 22, 1865 he married Lucretia Adeline Hatten and the couple is listed together on the following census reports:
He passed away in 1944 at the age of 99 and is buried next to his wife in
Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Winn Parish, Louisiana.[8]
