Biography

John was born in 1844 to John Christopher Smith (1805–1863) and Cynthia Ann Lee Smith (1811–1905). He is listed with his parents and eight siblings on the 1850 Census.^[1] On June 22, 1865 he married Lucretia Adeline Hatten and the couple is listed together on the following census reports:

• 1910 Census^[5]
• 1920 Census^[6]

Based on the data provided in the census records it is believed that this couple had at least eight children:

• 1. Cynthia Elizabeth Smith (1866–1877)
• 2. James Lafayette Smith (1869–1939)
• 3. Robert Percy Smith (1872–1972)
• 4. Peter Washington Smith (1875–1974)
• 5. Charles Wilson Smith (1879–1942)^[7]
• 6. Joseph N. Smith (1882–1886)
• 7. Lucy Jane (Smith) Meredith (1885–1965)
• 8. Beulah (Smith) McCarty (1888–1980)

He passed away in 1944 at the age of 99 and is buried next to his wife in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in Winn Parish, Louisiana.^[8]
