Ellen (Smith) Lee was born in Lancashire, England.

Ellen was the daughter of William Smith, a butcher, and his wife Isabella Meacle. She was born in 1881 in Liverpool, Lancashire.^[1]

In 1900 Ellen married John Anderson in Liverpool.^[2]

It isn't known when Anderson died, but Ellen was a widow at her marriage to actor Charles Edmund Lee on 21st September 1905.^[3][4] They had two sons, Edmund James born in 1906 and John Bernard born in 1908.

In 1913 Edmund petitioned for divorce on the grounds of Ellen's adultery. Whilst Ellen admitted to some of the allegations, she stated that there was still a relationship between her and Edmund, and so the case was dismissed.^[4]
