Lettice (Smith) Roe was born in County Durham, England.

Lettice Elizabeth Smith was baptised in in Great Stainton, Durham, on 24 December 1848 and was the eldest daughter of James Smith and Lettice Elizabeth Clues.[1]


On the 1851 census, Lettice, aged 2 years, is living in Great Stainton, Stockton, with her paternal grandparents.[2]

On the 1861 census, Lettice, aged 12 years, is living in Greater Stainton Village, Stockton, with her paternal grandmother.[3]

Lettice married George Roe in the town of Stockton in 1869 and they had nine children.[4]

On the 1871 census, George, a joiner, and Lettice are living at 5 Longley St, Stockton, with their son, Arthur, who is 7 months. They also have a lodger, Thomas Robinson, living with them.[5]

On the 1881 census, George, a joiner, and Lettice are living at 6 Sydney St, Stockton, with their children: Arthur (10 years), John (7 years), William (5 years), Edith (3 years), Alfred (1 year). Their eldest daughter, Annie, born in 1872, died, aged 3 years, in 1875. They also have a boarder, Joseph Alois Schmuke, who is a teacher of languages.[6]

On the 1891 census, George, a joiner, and Lettice are living at 16 Millbank St, Stockton, with their children: Arthur (20 years), John (17 years), William (15 years), Edith (13 years), Alfred (11 years), Frederick (9 years) and Florence (7 years). A daughter, Alice, was the twin sister of Florence, died in infancy. The oldest sons, Arthur and John, are working as grocer assistants.[7]

On the 1901 census, George, a licensed victualler, and Lettice are running the Commercial Inn, Norton Rd, Stockton, with their children: Arthur (30 years), Edith (23 years), Alfred (21 years), Frederick (19 years) and Florence (16 years). Arthur is a barman and Frederick is a house painter. Their second son, John, died in 1895.[8]

On the 1911 census, George, a retired joiner, and Lettice are living at Beech Grove, Norton, with their youngest daughter Florence (26 years). They also have a servant, Elizabeth Whitehouse, with them. The couple have been married for forty-one years and nine children have been born, although four have died.[9]

Lettice Elizabeth Smith died, aged 67 years, on 17 July 1916.[10]
