Research Note

News of the death of Mr. T. A. Smith, of 'Logie Bank', Mittagong, will come as a shock to the wide circle of his friends and acquaintances. Although Mr. Smith was in his 72nd year, he appeared to be in excellent health until a few days ago. With some members of his family he spent the Christmas holidays at Lake Illawarra. He became ill on Friday last and returned home. On Saturday it was evident he had caught a severe chill and he took to his bed. On Tuesday afternoon he passed away. Mr. Smith had spent his whole life in the district and had won the deepest respect of all who came in contact with him. Throughout his long life, his word was his bond and his kindly disposition made him ever a friend in need. He was born at Shellharbor in 1861 and came of an old South Coast pioneering family. He had his schooling at Mount Murray, and as a young man took up dairying on the Comerton Park Estate, where he resided until about eight years ago.

Mr. Smith was a lover of horses and a noted breeder of Clydesdales. He was often sought for as judge of horses or cattle at agricultural shows and his decisions, always fairly given, were rarely questioned by experts. Draught horses bred by him secured numerous awards at local shows and were much sought after by keen judges.

In 1885 Mr. Smith married Miss Elizabeth Ann Menzies, who survives him. His own death is the first break in the family, which includes three daughters and two sons. Two brothers and two sisters also survive him. The high esteem in which Mr Smith was held throughout the district found expression in one of the largest funerals ever seen at Bowral. The line of cars extended from the Gib to the Bowral Post Office, and amongst those present were representative men from every part of the district. An unusually large number of floral tributes were placed on the casket. Rev. C. P. Brown conducted a service at the home and officiated at the graveside in the Church of England portion of Bowral Cemetery, where this fine old pioneer takes his long rest.

A touching incident, indicating Mr. Smith's fatherly interest in the young, was the offering of prayer for his recovery at the Children's Mission at Lake Illawarra. - The Scrutineer and Berrima Press, 7 Jan 1933.
