Biography

Silas Smith was born on 6 March 1824 in Somerset, England, the son of Ann (Lacey) Smith and Charles Smith.[citation needed]

He married Maria Gooding on 7 August 1854 in Lambeth, London, England.[citation needed]

They migrated to Tasmania in 1855 on the "Heather Bell".[1]

Silas died on 5 Jul 1915 in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia, aged 91 years.[2]

Silas was christened in Uley in England on the 28 July 1833

Uley is a village and civil parish in the county of Gloucestershire, England. In the census of 1841 Silas was aged 15 years his parents Charles occupation Labourer aged 50 his mother Ann aged 45 and one brother Henry aged 10 Living at Whatley Langport Eastover Somerset.


In the census of 1851 Silas was aged 27 years at 33 & 34 Bow Street Police Station his occupation a Constable Metropolitan Police in St Pauls Convent Garden,London Middlesex"

In August 1854 he married Maria Gooding daughter of Samuel Gooding and Elizabeth Smith five months after their marriage Silas and Maria left England arriving into Hobart Tasmania Australia on the 27 August 1855 the following year after their arrival their first child Charles was born. after two years the family left Tasmania and In 1857 Silas, Maria and infant son Charles arrived in Portland ,Victoria Australia. They would go onto have a further 9 children in Victoria Morgey, Maud, Milo, Marwood, Meta, Mahala, Mira, Menoah, and Matthew At one time Silas was a farmer on a property he called " Sunnybank", and at other times his occupation was gardener. His wife Maria died in 1896 after that he went to live with his married daughter Morgey and her husband James at Hamilton dying there in 1915

OBITUARY.-Information reached this town on Monday of the death of one of the very earliest colonists in the person of Mr Silas Smith, for a very lengthy period a resident of Narrawong, but more recently of Heywood and Hamilton. Mr Smith, who was born on 6th March, 1824, at Langford, Somerset, England, landed at Hobart on the 27th August, 1855. After remaining there for a couple of years he sailed for Portland, arriving here on the 23rd April, 1857, and was a resident of this locality ever since. Mr. Smith for a number of years was a prominent worker in horticulture, and also in the agricultural lines, and successfully competed at many of the leading shows in the Portland district. As a man on the land, in a general sense, he was well in formed. For a number of years he resided with his married daughter, Mrs James Hanlon, of Heywood, and later on with them also at Hamilton. The remains were brought to Portland on Monday evening, and the funeral procession moved from St. Stephen's Church yesterday morning, the interment taking place at Narrawong,

Silas is buried with his wife Maria at Narrawong Silas was one of the founder of St James Church Tyrendarra also he was a trustee of the Narrawong Cemetery

He died from Heart Failure at the Criterion Hotel (now the Grand Central in Hamilton, owned by his daughter Morgey and son in law James Hanlon,
