Notes

  • Samuel was born about 1789 figuring backwards from the inscription on his tombstone. When I first started looking for my Smith ancestors I found Phineas Smith in Black Creek twp who appeared to have come from New Jersey around 1800,at first I thought Phineas may have been this Sam's father but then later found they were brothers.
  • Most accounts have Sam and Christianna arriving in Nescopeck Twp anywhere from 1814-1825 but going by his sons,William and Samuels census data,William was born in NJ in 1810 and Samuel was born in Pa in 1812 so it appears that Samuel and Christianna came to Nescopeck Twp shortly after William was born. The only other for sure info that I have for Samuel is his gravestone and from accounts that he was killed by his horse in 1841 while traveling to Easton,Pa to make the last payment on his property.
  • From HC Bradsbury's biographies, biography for Arron Smith, Samuel Smith, settled in Nescopeck in 1814, purchased a large tract of land, and while going to Philadelphia to meet his last payment on same, was killed by his horse within a short distance of home.
  • I've also found this Sam listed as Samuel Scholey Smith,Scholey being his middle name and it has made me wonder if that was possibly his Mothers maiden name but I have found nothing to back that up as yet.
