Notes
The following comes from Sally (Painter) Prior 1983 book "Ancestry of William John Greer and Sarah Isadora Greer":
"Phebey Smith (born 1761), daughter of Thomas Smith. She married Littleberry Mays, Sr., son of Henry and Phebey Mays, and brother of Betty Smith's husband Sherrod Mays."
"About 1795 Littleberry died, and as Phebey Mays she was party to deeds in Henry County, Virginia, up to 1806. Her home land was on Fall Creek in Henry County."
"In the early 1800's she was remarried, apparently in Henry County, to a man with a quaint name -- POSSUM JOHN JOYCE. In 1822 she signed as Phebey Joyce in witnessing her brother Drury's will." she signed as Phebey Joyce in witnessing her brother Drury's will."
"Phebey and Littleberry had at least two sons and three daughters. She and the daughters were named in her father's will as legatees to receive 'three negroes....and their increase.' She was also named in her brother Zachariah's will, and in the will of her son-in-law James Moore, who died in Rockingham County, North Carolina, in 1847."
"In the 1850 census of Henry County she was listed at age 89 in the household of Josiah Wilkes. She apparently died later in 1850, at which time final appraisement were made of the negroes...."
The Will of Phebey's father made his bequeath to her as follows: "then I lend to my daughter Phebe Mayes three negroes named.....Frank and Peter during her natural life and after her death they and their increase to be equally divided between her daughter."
