John Franklin Smead, son of Walter Joseph Smead and Catherine Georgia Hoch, was born on 25 February 1912 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, IN.
He and Helen Charlotte Gearhart obtained a marriage license on 8 February 1941 in Allen County, IN. He married Helen Charlotte Gearhart, daughter of George William Gearhart and Minnie Mae Barnhisel (Barnhisel-49), on 15 February 1941 in Allen County, IN. John D. Yundt officiated.
