Clara was born about 1874 in Texas to parents currently unknown.
The first record we have of Clara, she is listed as Clara Brown on the 1910 Census. She is living in a rented home at 1110 East Main Street in Brenham, Texas along with her three children. She is working as a washerwoman while her oldest son is employed as a laborer at the railroad and her daughter works as a nurse for a private family. Her youngest son is not employed and is not attending school. [1]
The 1920 Census finds Clara living in a rented home at 615 Main Street in Dallas, Texas along with her son and granddaughter. Clara is working as a laundress in a private home while her son is working as a public laborer. Her granddaughter is not yet old enough to attend school. [2]
After the 1920 Census, Clara is difficult to trace, but is listed in an obituary in San Diego for her death in May 1952. In her obituary the same three children from earlier records are mentioned; Rufus, Freeman, and Mattie. Clara is buried in San Diego, California at the Mount Hope Cemetery in a shared plot with her daughter Mattie. [3] [4]
It is unknown if Brown is Clara's maiden name or a married name.
Her daughter's death index lists the last name of Clara as Sloan.[5]
