Eventually, Herman became a construction foreman for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
His middle given might have been originally Krell, this is a family story. Subsequent generations show Kell as middle given, and Herman is buried under a stone carved Kell.[2]
The 1900 census names him as "Sampson" because he was a new-born, not yet named, and apparently a strong and stout baby, so one of his aunts allegedly gave his name as "Sampson."[3]
Interviews with descendants of Herman Kell Slatton who were en route from Alabama to McMinnville, Tennessee in the 1990s, stated that several of this family had moved to north Alabama for wmployment, and they were returning from those locations with some older members of the family who wanted to revisit graves and other locations along the Alabama-Tennessee border. This interview was conducted by Clinton Slayton at a Cracker Barrel restaurant along US 59, after hearing their "Slatton party" called to a table.
