Biography

His parents are uncertain, as is his marriage and name! It would be pretentious to suggest that a "biography" applies to this entry, as it might represent more than one person. The entry is made in the hopes of a collaborative effort to provide citeable records (not copied family trees) to bolster the uncited research provided by an ancestor to Clinton Slayton while he was living in Alabama.

This Thomas Slatton appears in the household of Littleton and Angeline (Slatton) Jean, but with evidence at hand, there are numerous possibilities: he could be a child of that couple, but his birthdate predates their reported marriage date. Could he be among the last children by the aging Aaron (born abt 1805) and Adeline Slatton (born abt 1811)? He never appears in their household. Could they be the adopted children of Littleton and Angeline Jean from a previous liason of Angeline's? Could they be children of Angeline by an unknown Slatton father?

Using clues developed and traced by descendant Hazel Kidd Lawson, it appears that he might have adopted the surname Jean, and produced issue by a Mary New citation needed, including a giveaway given name Ezra, [1] [2] known from a earlier man of the same name in the family of Littleton and Angeline Jean. This younger Ezra K. named a son Littleton Vernon Jean, according to Hazel Kidd Lawson. [3] [4]

The fate of Thomas Slatton/Jean is unknown. he might have simply worked away from the family, deserted them, or passed away sometime before 1899. (In 1910 census already cited, a ten-year-old is reported with Mary.) He might have reverted to using Slatton surname, but in either case, he seems to vanish.
