Family legend, food for thought

Any male descendant traced to Aaron Slatton might be expected to match yDNA from male descendants of George W. Slaton, who is suspected to be the head of an 1820 Monroe County Tennesee census which likely includes Aaron as a a contemporary young man (16-25 years old). [2] George W. descendants exhibit the same I-M253 haplogroup as other proven or conjectured descendants of George, John and Major Slaten [3]

At a meeting among genealogists in the Birmingham Alabama Southern History Collection (Tutwiler), a story was told that is a common explanation for what geneticist Bryan Sykes of Oxford Ancestors calls a "non-paternal event": a preacher travelling through north Arkansas scattered his seed among many women, including some unnamed "Fagan girls." This was supposedly well-known among Arkansas genealogists.

It should be noted that four men paper-traced to Aaron Slatton through two of his sons, Charles A. and John J., exhibit the haplogroup R-M269, and each of those sons married Fagan/Fagin sisters, Barsheba and Rebecca. This suggests two possibilities, one, that Aaron Slatton himself carried that haplotype to pass down, or two, that some of his paper-trail includes a male interloper whose issue were adopted as Slattons, possibly from consorting with two sisters who married two Slatton brothers. The second scenario would seem much more likely if any male paper-traced back to Aaron Slatton exhibited I-M253. Seemingly overturning the second scenario is that one paper-trailed descendant with R-M269 is traced not to Barsheba Fagan, but to a woman named Parlina, but this paper-trail is conjectural until actual marriage or other records can confirm that.

The Slaton Slatton Slayden DNA Project is in hope of finding or being contacted by more men whose yDNA might bolster either contention. Two of the four men appear in the public grid at the DNA Project link above.
