Biography

Overvue: I am the last Family name (male) member of my line of Slaters (van der Leijs). My Great Great Grandfather - John Slater (Tjitse van der Leij) was born in Opsterland Netherlands in 1830 and jumped ship circa 1848 in Port Adelaide in South Australia. His wife, my Great Great Grandmother was Eliza Richmond who arrived from England with her Mother and Father on the ship "Harpley" circa 1848. Following the line to me - they had a son Charles who in turn had a son Herbert Frederick who in turn had a son Douglas (my Father) who in turn had me, his only male child.

My goal is to build an accurate line of Ancestors starting with my Paternal Family line and then branching out to all Ancestors and Descendants of John Slater (Tjitse van der Leij) in Australia and then back to the Netherlands.

I will include all of my sources for individuals as they are added to the tree

Sources

  • Paternal relationship is confirmed with a MyHeritage and GedMatch match between Brian Slater (Slater-1430) and Private DNA Jones (Jones-48257). Both profiles are Great, Great Grandchildren of Tjitze van der Leij and Eliza Richmond, hence third Cousins.
  • Maternal relationship is confirmed by a MyHeritageDNA test match between Brian Slater and his 3rd cousin. Their most-recent common ancestors are George Townsend and Margaret Blackburn, the 2nd great grandparents of both profiles. Predicted relationship from MyHeritage: 3rd-5th cousins.

Hello from Canada Brian. I see we share some DNA - total 66.4, largest 5.1. Perhaps that is a Holland/Germany thing, as I had a German grandmother we did not know from Oldenburg. I wandered to "Private DNA Jones" - not much there for me. But on his/her profile there is Veronica Coat Williams whose name I recognize. I compared the two of you and you share some large chunks - you should probably compare notes with her Veronica (Coat) Williams. Her Kit is QP117140C1. I thought maybe she and I shared Irish (Courtney family), but perhaps we are all Dutch/German  :)

Hi Chris,

Thank you for the message. How is the weather in your part of the world. I am sitting here with the air cooler cranked up to the max. It is currently 42 degrees C outside. I have been in contact with Veronica on many occasions. I am 8 degrees separated from Veronica according to the Wikitree relationship finder, but we share no blood relationship. Her Great Great Grandmother was married to my Great Great Grandfather but her line comes from her Great Great Grandmother's previous marriage to a Samuel Bradley. My Great Great Grandfather was Dutch, Tjitse van der Leij (Van_der_Leij-20) who changed his name to John Slater. If you send me your email I will send you a mud map of my relationship to Veronica. I would be interested in pursuing our own linkage. Cheers Brian Slater

Hi Mindy

thanks for your comments. I would like to bring to your attention a problem which has occurred with GEDmatch. Somehow GEDmatch had a duplicate copy of my test, but with a different reference number. The test had to be removed to allow the correct test to operate. I have removed the duplicate test but the test that now remains and is operational does not match the information for me in Wikitree. The test that was removed is the ZK4111118 which is on all of my relevant Wikitree pages. The test number that should be shown now is EH8331738. I trust you can fix this problem at some stage and thank you in anticipation. Yours sincerely Brian Slater (Slater-1430)
