Sarah was just a baby when her family went out west from Ohio to Indiana for a period. Here is the story of that excursion written in "Things I Remember" by her half-brother, George Andrew Shrigley, in 1948.
"We get to Greenfield, Indiana about four o'clock Tuesday afternoon the 17th of September. We drove on four miles further to little Philadelphia where some relatives were living.
This was not my father's first trip to the west. He was married October 24, 1838. Within the next two or three years, his wife's people decided to come to the west. My father came along and brought a load of his goods. They came to Hancock County, Indiana. Sometime in 1842, my father decided to come west. He and his wife and Sarah, then a baby and another man and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Furman James, came together. They came on to Edgar county, Illinois. The county was new and there was a lot of malaria. Father was sick most of the time and after a year and a half in Indiana, they went back to Ohio.
And now in September 1872 he and his family were on his third trip west, this time headed for the corn belt section of Illinois. Near this little town is where his first wife's parents lived. Besides themselves, there were three girls and a boy came west. My father's first wife and another married daughter (Sarah (Ross) Kirkpatrick) stayed in Ohio. The old folks had passed away just a few years before. One girl (Violet (Ross) McKelvey) was living in little Philadelphia. One (Nancy (Ross) Hedgecock) was living at Michigan City, Indiana, and the other girl (Mary (Ross) Nichols) and boy (James Ross) was living in Indianapolis. These all were Aunts and Uncles to my half sisters, Sarah and Mary. The older folks name was Ross. The name of the one we visited with was Violet. Her husband's name was John McKelvey. We stayed there two nights. The folks visited and did washing and baking and it gave the horses a good rest."
