William was an engineer for the railroad. He retired on 1 Feb 1938 after nearly 50 years of service. Many of the Shrigley men worked for the railroad in Ohio and Pennsylvania. His father was a pioneer railroad engineer. William was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.

Death
Willam died on 6 Apr 1940 in Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio, at the age of 67.[13][14] His son, Carl K. Shrigley, died just two days before him and his wife was terribly ill at home and would pass away eight months later.
