During the War of 1812 Bazil served in Robert Gustin's Company, Colonel Griffin Taylor's 1st Regiment of Virginia Militia. He entered service at Martinsburg, Virginia, on 14 August 1814 and was discharged at Ellicotes Mills on 14 November 1814 after completing his 90-day tour of duty.[2]
According to Bazil's pension application in the National Archives he was "at Baltimore at the time of the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British fleet and was also in Washington City some time shortly after the burning of the Capitol and White House." The burning Capitol and White House occurred on 24 and 25 August 1814. The bombardment of Fort McHenry, at Baltimore, occurred on the night of 13 September 1814. It was at this time that Francis Scott Key wrote the words to "The Star Spangled Banner."[citation needed]
On 20 June 1820 in Morgan County, Virginia (now West Virginia), he married Sarah Elenor "Ellen" or "Nellie" Barker.[3][4][5] This may have been his second marriage as he has two children living with him on the 1820 census in Bath District, Morgan County, Virginia.[6] Ellen and Bazil had a large family, including:
Following his wife's death in 1855,[43] Bazil found a home with his son-in-law. Thus, in 1860, Basil (age 67, farmhand) and his youngest daughter Sarah Shockey (17) resided in Clay Township, Highland County, with his daughter Sena (25) and son-in-law Albert Fry (24, farmer), their children Mathew (2) and Amanda Fry (one month), and a seven-year-old named Alexander Spilhe.[44]
By 1870, Bazil (age 77, invalid) had taken up residence with his son Francis M. (29, farmer) and his wife Cloe (27) in Clay Township, Highland County.[45]
Bazil died 18 May 1875 in Sicily, Clay Township, Highland County, at age 82 years, seven months, from dropsy (edema).[46] (It should be noted that his gravestone gives his age at death as 80 years, 9 months, and 7 days, from which his birth date has been calculated.)[47] He was buried at Harwood Cemetery in Harwood, Highland County.[47]
