Private Cornelius Shaw served with 2nd New Jersey Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Birthdate
There is a 1765 birth record for a Cornelius Shaw in the New Jersey Births & Christenings index,[1] which matches his date of birth as stated in his death record or obituary, both of which record he was 51 when he died on 18 May 1816).[2][3]
1765 is early given that it was reported he had "7 years service"[3] during the American Revolution. If he enlisted in 1776, he would have been only 11. The muster rolls located so far are from 1782, when he would have been 17.
Another birthdate that sometimes appears is "about 1757" but that's not sourced.
1776
Cornelius' obituary records that he "served 7 years under Gen. Washington in the revolutionary contest".[3]
Cornelius Shaw appears on the "Roll and muster of the 4th campaign New Jersey [??] Command by [Col.???] Elias(?) Dayton for May 1782 under Captain Samuel Hendry[?] and Lieut. George Walker."[4] He is listed on the July 1782 muster and roll under the same commanding officers. The text of both is hard to decipher but it looks like the "third company" of 2d Jersey Reg."[5]
He is listed in the Official Register of Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War as "Private Shaw, Cornelius. Second Battalion, Second Establishment; Second Regiment."[6]
Marriage to Phebe Joslin
"April 23, 1787, Cornelius Shaw to Phebe Joslin" at the Pittsgrove Baptist Church.[7]

This looks like a record for a later Cornelius Shaw (perhaps a descendant), as this index supposedly doesn't cover the Revolution: Pension Numerical Index record for Cornelius A. Shaw, B 2, N.J. Inf., C.T.F. #132203, Retrieved 19 April 2015 from Fold3
