Mustered out: June 12, 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 192nd Regiment, New York Infantry; 3rd Brigade

MARRIED ONLY 3 MONTHS AND 20 DAYS - Just before he went off to war, 20-year-old Cleophas Senecal, who was born in Quebec, married Julia Vincent on February 23, 1865, in St. Peter’s Church in Plattsburgh. He enlisted five days later and was mustered into Company E on March 28th under the name Claffeois. The regiment offered men the opportunity for men to serve for one, two or three years of service. Cleophas chose the 1-year term.

The regiment formed in Albany and when company E was mustered in, Cleophas found he was in the company of not only men from the Plattsburgh area, but also men from Poughkeepsie, Troy, Utica and Schenectady.

They arrived in Virginia as part of the second detachment of men sent from Albany – Companies E, F, G and H – to serve in 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division of the Army of the Shenandoah which had been in control of the Shenandoah Valley since the previous October.

Cleophas was never in battle but was with the regiment at the beginning of the Appomattox Campaign. He became ill and died of febro-typhoid pneumonia in hospital at Baltimore, MD, on June 12, 1865. Typhoid is caused by a type of salmonella infection spread by food or water contaminated by feces. At the time of Cleophas’ death about 1/3 of people who contracted typhoid died. During the war, just over 75,000 cases were reported and about 27,000 people died of the disease.

Julia started receiving her Widow’s Pension on June 30, 1865, at 18 years of age. On October 13, 1866, she married Dosite Charbonneau in the same church she married Cleophas just one year and seven months before?
