GERMANS TO AMERICA, LISTS OF PASSENGERS ARRIVING AT U.S. PORTS 1850-55, VOLUME 3, JUNE 1852 - SEPT 1852, BY IRA A. GLAZIER AND P. WM. FILBY: "Why was there such a great mass of people wishing to quit their homeland for the unknown U.S.? Emigration from Germany was spurred by a variety of factors, including crop failures, a lack of industrial employment, overpopulation, social discontent, and political repression and upheaval, as well as the lure of cheap land and the chance to make a fresh start in a new country. The most important ports of arrival in the U.S. were New York, from which the immigrants dispersed via Albany and Troy throughout the western part of the country."

Maria Anna Knoche (born April 8, 1826 in Schlipruthen, Prussia) traveled with Christoph Selle's family to America. Her parents were Christoph Heinrich Knoche (born November 29, 1789 in Schlipruthen, Prussia and died May 16, 1837 in Prussia) and Anna Maria Elisabeth Selle (born January 10,1797 in Schlipruthen, Prussia and died December 16, 1849 in Schlipruthen, Prussia). All the Knoche family died except Maria Anna before passage to America. She was 24 years old in 1852 with no husband or immediate family. Her baptismal certificate was found along with a release letter from the Prussian government for the family of Christoph Selle and a letter written by Pastor Tillman (St. Georg Church, Schlipruthen, Prussia) stating that Maria Anna Knoche's baptismal certificate was a true copy. These three German papers were found in the safety deposit box of Earl T. Selle by his son, William T. Selle, in 1980. The German papers were 128 years old, written in old German, yellowed, and in three pieces. The release letter from the Prussian government allowing Christoph Selle's family to go to America lists the family living in Schlipruthen, Westfalia, Prussia. It also lists the same ages of the Selle family as listed on the passenger list for the ship "Europa" except Ferdinand is listed as ten years old and Elisabeth is listed as eight.
