I am researching my father's great, great, great grandfather, Jacob Schmitt/smith who was born in Alsace-Lorraine in 1813. Jacob Schmitt had a son, Phillip Smith, born about 1840--perhaps I can share history with you-Jacob Smith, Jr. born in New York in about 1842...I'm new to this but excited as my aunt mailed me a tree that has been in the works for many decades. I feel she may be passing a torch to me!
