Jean, or John as he was known after his immigration to the U.S., was born in France, probably in Moselle, Lorraine in about 1774.
A marriage source was found from the "Archives départementales du Jura" for Jeanne Schmitte and Anne Somer, who were married at Bertrambois, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorraine, France on 10 November 1811. Their daughter Barbe Schmitt Mosiman (born 1811) married Christian Mosiman who was said to have lived in Frémonville, Meurthe-et-Moselle in 1824. Frémonville is about 6 miles from Bertrambois. Note: This source is an index of records compiled from various sources, it is not an original document.
In 1850 he was living at District 2, Campbell County, Kentucky with his wife, three inferred children, Mary, Peter and John Smith, all born in France, Catherine Smith (who was likely the wife of their inferred son John) and a laborer, Henry Burns, born in Germany. Jean appeared as John Smith, a 76 year old farmer. Their daughter Barbara Musselman (Mosiman) was living in the next dwelling.
In 1860 John Smith was living in Campbell County with his wife and four other family members, Ann Smith (age 44, born in France), Mary Smith (age 39, born in France), and two children, John Smith (age 17) and Alice Smith (age 13), both born in Illinois, and likely the children of either Ann or Mary Smith, who could have been daughter-in-laws? John Smith Senior was recorded as 88 years old. John Smith, likely a son, was living in the next dwelling with his wife Catherine.
