Anna was born around 1838. She was baptized in August, 1838 in Hackenheim, Alzey, Hessen, Germany, the daughter of Johannes Schmitt and Barbara Reisert.
[1]
Anna Marie arrived in New York with her family (relocating from Hesse, Germany) on the William Penn in 1867.
Included in the ship's manifest were Johann (60), Barbara (50), Anna Maria (28), Caspar (26), Jacob (23), Michel (21), Elizabeth (16), Barbara (9) and Clara (7) Schmitt[2] (Note: in the 1870 census, this family was residing in Franklin County, Indiana, with the exception of Anna Marie (who had by then married John Kiefer in Franklin County and moved to Tipton County).[3]
John Kiefer and Anna "Smith" were married in Franklin County, Indiana on August 24, 1869.[4]
In 1880, John and Anna were in Cicero, Tipton County, Indiana with five children.[5]
In 1900, John and Annie Kiefer resided in Cicero, Indiana with six children.[6]
Researchers have proposed alternative parents for Anna Marie: Valentine Schmidt (born circa 1812, died before 1854 in Germany) and Barbara Reisert (married Valentine circa 1830 in Heidesheim, Essen Germany).

autosomal DNA
test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Anna:
Schmidt-14882 and Schmitt-5597 appear to represent the same person because: same parents; birth information similar, death info identical. Last name at birth should be Schmitt. Merge as soon as the parents of both profiles have been merged.
It appears Anna Maria's last name at birth was Schmitt, not Schmidt. So far, there are only three records found with her last name before she was married: her baptismal record says "Schmitt", as does the ship's manifest when her family arrived in America. At her marriage in Indiana, "Smith" was used. "Schmitt" is also used on the baptism records for all of her siblings, and on her father's marriage record. Suggest changing her last name at birth to "Schmitt".
