Walter Scheel had been married to Eva Charlotte Kronenberg since 1942. She died of cancer in 1966. From this marriage a son was born.
From 1969 until her death in 1985 Walter Scheel was married to the doctor Mildred Wirtz. She brought a daughter into the marriage, whom Walter Scheel adopted. Another daughter was born from this marriage; a son was adopted from Bolivia.
In 1988 Scheel married the physiotherapist Barbara Wiese.
Because of dementia, Walter Scheel lived in a nursing home from 2012.
In 1969 Scheel was named Tie Man of the Year (an honor from the German advertising industry).
Walter Scheel's musical performance became very well known with the folk song "Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen" (Youtube link), which he recorded together with two male choirs from Düsseldorf. This was performed on 6 December 1973 on the television show "Drei mal Neun". In January 1974 the song was number five in the German single charts.
