Mimi was the daughter of Lona and Marcus Schaeffer, both immigrants from Denmark, and grew up in Valley Stream and Downsville, New York where she graduated from Downsville Central School in 1948 along with her 12 classmates!
She moved to Alpine, CA in 1949-50 along with her parents and brother, Allan, where they were caretakers at the The Willows just East of Alpine. Shortly after their arrival, Mimi went shopping at the Alpine Store, and met future husband John "Jack" Wilson who (family lore has it) declared to himself on the spot "That's the woman I'm going to marry!".
After their honeymoon, Mimi and Jack resided at Camp Stonemen, California for the duration of Jack's service in the Army Air Corp. They then returned home to Alpine where they assumed proprietorship of the Alpine Store and started their family.
Moving from Alpine to La Mesa in 1964, Mimi took a job three blocks from home at Southland Savings & Loan which eventually became Imperial Savings & Loan where she worked as a loan officer at several branches until closing its doors during the savings and loan crisis.
