Biography

William Say was the son of Edward Say Esq of Bletchingdon and Woodstock, Oxfordshire, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Jerome Keyt. He was baptised on 21 October 1639. [1] He matriculated at Oriel College Oxford in 1655 [2] and his admission on 10 November in the same year to the Middle Temple. [3] (There is no record of his being called to the bar.)

His mother died in 1639, probably from the complications of his birth, [4] and his father on 8 January 1646/7, according to the inscription on his memorial at St Mary's Chapel, Woodstock. [5]

He was named in the 1648 Will of her grandmother, Elizabeth Keyt. [6] His uncle Robert Say, later Provost of Oriel College, was granted the administration of his father's estate and the guardianship of the children until the elder, Anne Say, achieved her majority. [7]

William later acquired title to the properties from his father's estate [8] [9] and sold several of them by 1673.

He may have died before 1692, when he was not named in the Will of his uncle Robert Say, who had been his guardian. [10]
