Youngster Drowns in Water Hole

A 7-year-old boy was drowned Monday afternoon while swimming in a rain-filled construction excavation in the 5000 block of Grand Street.

THE DEAD BOY was Pete Sanchez, son of Mr and Mrs Bernardo Sanchez of 4503 Lucille St. He was a student of Brackenridge Elementary School.

A crowd of about 300 persons watched as members of the Harris County Emergency Corps and the Mercy Corps tried to recover the body with grappling hooks.

The corpsmen were successful on their second attempt in the 12-foot-deep water hole. The excavation is about 25 feed wide and 300 feet long.

Apparently young Pete, his brother and another boy stopped at the rain pond on their way home from school.

THE BROTHER, Raul, 10, and Louis Varela, 6, told rime Prevention Officer R. C. Martinez they had all been swimming when Pete went under about 6 feet from the bank.

Justice D. F. Thompson returned a verdict of accidental drowning.

Young Sanchez went under about 3:30 PM, the boys said. However, police were not notified of the drowning until two hours later.

AREA RESIDENTS told police that last week's heavy rains filled the excavation with water.

Services are being arranged by the Villarreal Funeral Home.[4]
