Henry died in a mining accident at The Calumet and Heckla Mine in Calumet, Michigan in 1895. Mary helped support the family by weaving rugs. Her older children worked. They lived in Calumet, Houghton, Michigan. [2] Mary began dating her neighbor Joe Smith. Mary and Joe married in 1901. [3] He is believed to be the father of:
Since they were not married at the time Arthur and Leonard were born, they carried the name Romberg. Rose was born after their marriage, so she was a Smith.
Joseph died in 1908. Mary continued living in Calumet, Michigan with her children. [4]
Mary moved to Chicago with her 2 youngest sons. They lived with her daughter Ida Romberg Harland. [5] She lived with her son Arthur in 1940. [6] Maria died in 1942 [7] and was buried on 1 Jul 1942 in Ridgewood Cemetery, Des Plains, Cook, Illinois [8]
