He was christened on 12 December 1853 at St. Cuthbert, Wells.[4]
When the 1871 England Census rolled around, William was living in St Sidwell, Devonshire, England.[3] His grandfather Charles Fry was named as head of the household, and William's occupation was noted as "Miller Corn Merchant".[3]
In October 1877, at age 24, William travelled to[5]Australia aboard[6]the 'Durham'. He arrived in Victoria with his younger brother Arthur.[7]
William married Catherine Mary Holmes on 21 May 1883 at Glen Wallace in Poowong, Victoria.[8][9] Glen Wallace was the home of Mrs Wallace-Dunlop,[8] who was the sister of William's brother Arthur's future wife.[10]
Together William and Catherine (who he called "Kitty"[11]) had four children:
At age 60, William married again, to Annie Laing Reid Sutherland on 9 June 1920.[17][18] At the time of his second marriage he was an invalid in bed, in a low condition.[19][20]
Salmon Reserve is named after William Salmon. He gifted the reserve to the people of the City of Essendon in 1918. He was a "tree enthusiast" who planted many of the trees that are now mature at that site.[21]
He donated a stained glass window depicting the Ascension to Essendon North Christ Church to pay tribute to his son, daughter and son-in-law for their services overseas during World War I.[22]
William died on 12 September 1923 in North Essendon, aged 69 years.[23][24]
Obituary
William Frederick Salmon, public accountant, died at his home in Woodlands-street, North Essendon, on Wednesday evening 12 September 1923, after an illness extending over three years. Deceased was a Fellow of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants for over twenty years, and took a practical interest in rural pursuits. At one time he owned properties in the north of Victoria, besides being interested in fruit growing, having an up-to-date commercial orchard at Werribee. His grazing interests, now chiefly confined to South Gippsland, found outlet during his life for the advancement of the breeds of the Border Leicester and Southdown types of sheep. He was the principal partner in the firm of Rossiter Bros. and Salmon of Numeralla, Hedley, where all his energies were devoted to the advancement of the Southdown type of sheep, and where some excellent pioneering work was done in the reclamation of swamp lands. He leaves a widow and three daughters. His only son, Lieutenant Percy W. Salmon, was killed in the attack on Mont St. Quentin on 1st September 1918.[25]
