Hi : I notice that you changed the last name of “ lesieur-159 “ as you said that in Quebec married woman kept their last name after marriage. I was born and raised in French in Montreal. In 1942 when I was born and all subsequent years until I was 40 years old .At that time all women around me ,mother,aunts grand parents,great grand parents took the man’s name after mariages. Then a change was made where woman kept their original name. Was this change made retroactively to the 1700s 1800s ?. Were the woman in the times of our ancestors change or kept their names? Please let me know if the current situation about last name was in force in 1800 and where you got this information? Thank you: pierre

Hello K, On 2/20/2020 I created the profile for Marie-Marguerite Frechette-348.

checking my research I found the correct spelling of her last name is Frichet. How do I delete myself a her profile manager? I have Marie-Marguerite Frichet , correct spelling, in my family tree. Gail. Thank-you for your help in correcting my mistake. It is confusing at times trying to find the correct spelling.

Hi K, thanks for your suggestion that Racicot 144 and Racicot 32 are the same person. I agree although we have some differences in some of the details. This is the first time I have had an opportunity to merge and I hope that I am doing it properly. If not, please let me know. Also, I wanted you to know of some of the additional research and thoughts I have had about his death (date and place). Jean Baptiste appears to be the first in my line of Racicots to leave Canada and come to the US.

I'm searching for information about Jean Baptiste Racicot who became John B. Roscoe when he came to the US. His parents were Antoine Racicot and Marie Anne Bousquet.

Jean married Marie Olive Blanchet, September 1851. In the 1851 Canadian census he was a farmer in St Pie, Quebec and listed just above Olive without further comment. Their ages listed in the census are consistent with their known birth dates.

In the 1861 Canadian census they were living in Bagot and Jean was still farming. They had 5 children.

He was next found in the 1870 US Census, living in Enfield, Hartford County, CT. Jean had changed his name to John Roscoe, was living with Olive and now 8 children. Although several of the children are listed as working in the carpet mill John's occupation is described as an “Indian physician”.

John’s oldest son, Joseph Alfred (Frederick) married Sophia Morris in 1872 in Millbury, MA. It is unclear if the family had moved to Millbury.

John is not in the 1880 US census but he is in the 1881 Canadian census. He lives with Olive and several of their children, including son Alfred and his wife Sophia, in St. Louis Ward of Montreal where he and his son are listed as being merchants. And here John's trail goes ice cold.

In the 1897 City Directory for Newton, MA, Olive Roscoe is listed as being the widow of John and she is living with her daughter and son-in-law (Napoleon Auclair). Obviously, John had died between 1881 and 1897. In the 1900 US census Olive still lives with the Auclair family. In the 1910 US census Olive is living with her youngest daughter and her husband (Joseph Chabot). Olive died in 1913 in Palmer, MA.

If anyone has information on John's whereabouts and activities between 1881 and 1897 and/or his death I would appreciate hearing from you. Of course, you don't have to know about John to respond to my note...I'd be happy to hear from anyone who is interested in the Racicot-Roscoe family.

When I add ancestors to my tree from Canada I usually receive a notice to merge same people from existing trees. I'm some what reluctant to add my research. Also, I appreciate the records you've added..I have records in my ancestry.com but still trying to add them to wiki tree... Gail

Hi K - there were about three things converging to make that hot mess with the Thomas/Renaud/Blondeau families, and then to add to it, we were working on it at the same time. Wikitree seems to have kept it straight, and now we just need to await the other managers to approve their side of the mergers. Thanks for catching this. It's a mystery why a couple of those matches didn't get caught at entry. The others, well it's a long story, and I don't turn out well at the end of it! I still think there might be an incorrect "Paul Thomas" father attached to old man Thomas, but let's see if the other manager catches it.
