Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Richard Ryals Sr was a North Carolina colonist.

Although an unconfirmed match, we find Richard Rhyl as Captain Eyre's Men on Guard at The State House in 1775.[1] And, similarly, in 1776.[2] Richard Ryals is described of Virginia, and as having served as a private in the Wilmington militia, Cumberland County, North Carolina.[3][4]

Other than military service, we first find Richard Ryals in the 1790 census, as Richard Ryal in Cumberland, North Carolina.[5]

For the 1800 census, he shows up in the same location as Richard Ryalls.[6] And, for the 1820, in the same region, then referenced as Capt Baily District, Cumberland, we find him as Richard Ryals.[7]

Family of Consent

Lastly, his Cumberland County probate record shows up in 1816, in which his wife, Milbra "Milly" or Milley[8] (Baggett)[3][4] Ryals is named as Executrix.[9][10]

The following children are shown as having supporting documents on DARGRS:[4] or are named in Richard Ryall's will:[8]

  1. Mary (Ryals) Avery, who had married Richard Avery[4]
  2. Young Ryals, who had married Susan Canada[4][8]
  3. Richardson Ryall[8]
  4. Lovett Ryals[8]
  5. Elizabeth Ryall[8]
  6. Nancy Ryall[8]
  7. Winifred Ryall[8]
  8. Ridley (Ryall)[8] Adams Woodard[11]

Slaves

  1. Esther (girl)[8] who was bequeathed to wife, Milley (Baggett) Ryals
  1. Jack ("boy")[8] who was bequeathed to son, Young Ryals
  1. Henry ("boy")[8] who was bequeathed to son, Lovett Ryals

Research Notes

  • Matching on Ancestry.com suggests Joseph (ca. 1717-1769) and Sarah (ca. 1721-1800) Ryals as parents. No FamilySearch records emerge for this pair, but a Find A Grave: Memorial #23937560 does show Joseph Melvin Ryals (ca. 1717-1782, different dates), buried at Hannahs Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery (Four Oaks, Johnston County), North Carolina, who was the son of Joseph Bernard Ryals (ca. 1695) and Magdalen [this generation being presumptively matched as Joseph Ryals (bef. 1695) and his proven wife, Magdalen (Kollock) Royal (died 24 Apr 1722)]. Note that an undated birth record shows Joseph Melvin Ryals as the son of Joseph Bernard Ryals, but no dates are given.[12]
  • This Joseph's wife is also shown as Sarah Ryals (ca. 1721-1789), also buried at Hannahs Creek on FindAGrave.
