Walter RUTT was born in 1842 in Islington, Middlesex, England[1]. His parents were Thomas RUTT and Mary DEACON
In 1861, he was 18 years old, living with his parents at Barnsbury Park, Islington St Mary, Middlesex, England and employed as a pupil to a civil engineer[2].
The ship, Arab Steed set sail from London, England on 2 November 1868 with Walter RUTT as a cabin passenger and arrived in Port Adelaide, Colony of South Australia on 2 February 1869[3].
Elizabeth Sarah HAILES and Walter RUTT were married on 30 August 1873 at Stow Congregational Church, Adelaide, Colony of South Australia[4].
The death occurred on Sunday of Mr. Walter Rutt of Pembroke-street St. Peters in his 83rd year. Mr. Rutt, who was chief Engineer for Railways for some years, retired from the Public Service under the provisions of the Public Service Retirement Act in 1912. He was a man of the highest integrity, whose word was always his bond. Mr. Rutt was chief Engineer in the Engineer-in-Chief's Department, but was generally known as the Chief Engineer for Railways. He was born in London in 1842, and was educated at the London University College School. He was articled to the profession of engineer with Mr. W. Wilson, of Westminster, and continued with the same gentleman after completing his indentures, and was engaged on important railway works. After filling other positions in Engiand, Mr. Rutt came to South Australia in 1869, and entered the drawing office of the Public Works Department. His first big work was the preparation of the plans tor the Hope Valley Reservoir. He assisted in the survey for the extension of the railway northward from Port Augusta, and was later placed as second in command in the construction of the northern portion of the overland telegraph line. He also was engaged on the survey of the first Western Australian railway, and on his return from the West entered the Government service as a railway surveyor. Later he was drafted to the Engineer-in-Chief's Department, and took charge of the preparation of all estimates. In 1886 he was appointed assistant engineer for railway construction, and had the general supervision of the work of building the railway between Hergott Springs and Oodnadatta. On the death of Mr. W. D. Lovell in 1896, Mr. Rutt became Chief Assistant Engineer, a position he held until he was made Chief Engineer for Railways in 1909. He was treasurer of the Boys' Society of South Australia, a deacon of the College Congregational Church, also having been superintendent of the Sunday school for many years, and had been president of the Public Service Association, of which body he was a life member. He leaves a widow, two sons, Mr C. W. Rutt and Mr. E. Rutt, and one daughter, Miss Rutt.

The Rutt family were nonconformists, with various family members attending. different churches in London. Many then joined the Sandemanian Church in London.
