Charles was born on February 11, 1842. He is the son of Orlando Rutherford and Elizabeth Pherrill. He was privately baptized by Rev. James Stewart at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Dunwich Township on September 26, 1842.[1] In the 1871 and 1881 census he was listed as a carpenter. He apparently moved to Oil Springs in Lambton County after 1871 (because three of his children were born there between 1875 and 1878), but the family was listed back in Dereham township in the 1881 census, it probably had to do with Margaret's TB infection. By 1901 the family has returned to Lambton County and Charles is listed with his new wife Mary and five of the seven children he had with her. On the 1901 census he is listed as a farmer. On the 1911, Mary is listed as the family head and Charles has no occupation listed (was he ill during at that time?). In 1921 he is living in the village of Oil Springs with his son Richard, by his first wife, Margaret.
He passed away in 1927 at Charlotte Eleanor Englehart Hospital in Petrolia Ontario.[2] Cause of death uremia.
