John Rust was born in 1755 in Prince William County, Virginia Colony.[1] He was a son of John Rust (1719-1776) and his wife Sarah.[2]
John married Sarah Clement per his DAR record. [1] Other sources record her name as Sarah "Sally" Mason.[2]

John was living in Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1776, when he volunteered his service as a Private in the Virginia troops in the North. He was in the battles of Harlem Plains and White Plains. On 19 Nov 1776, he was appointed an Ensign in the 10th Virginia Regiment. In the summer of 1777, he was commissioned a Lieutenant under Captain Thomas Blackwell. He was wounded in the Battle of Brandywine, but still able to serve. He was also at Valley Forge. In 1779 he was promoted to Captain in Colonel Thomas Marshall's regiment. He also served as captain in Colonel M____ regiment and as captain of a rifle company during the winter/spring 1781. He served close to the end of the war.[3]

John Rust passed away on 24 Jul 1841 in Mason County, Kentucky.[1] He was buried in Rust Cemetery, Maysville Mason County, Kentucky.[5]
