Biography

Private Hezekiah Russell served with 8th Connecticut Provincial Regiment (1775), Continental Army during the American Revolution.

Hezekiah Russell is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A098358.

Hezekiah was born Mar 18 1745 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut to Nathan Russell and Sarah ^[1]

Hezekiah fought at the battle of Bunker Hill and throughout the Revolutionary War. His children were all born in Connecticut. His son, Dan was the first permanent settler in Orwell, Bradford Co., Pennsylvania. Dan and his wife Polly left Connecticut in the Spring of 1794 and arrived at Shepard's Creek. They moved to Sheshequin for a year and then settled in Orwell, A few years later, after his wife had died [correction -- see NOTE below], Hezekiah left Connecticut and followed Dan to Orwell.

Hezekiah's children who settled in Orwell were:

Dan, born September 26 1770, married Polly Chubbuck, November 21, 1791

Michael ("Mike"), married Polly Green

Hezekiah, married first Polly Ellis, then Eunice Lovett, and died in Orwell

Roswell, married Polly Webster

Roxanna married Anson Collins

Three of Hezekiahs's daughters remained in the east:

Polly. married a Mr. Colton

Hannah, married a Mr. Merriman

Sally (Sarah), married a Mr. John Ebons (Aborn)

Hezekiah married again in his later years on October 22, 1822. Heverly quotes from The Settler: "...Capt. Hezekiah Russell (a Revolutionary soldier), aged 78 years, and Mrs. Elenor Osbourne, aged 74 years, both of Orwell." The marriage was brief, as Hezekiah died suddenly January 3, 1823. aged 79 years. (There is a date/age discrepancy here, providing the date of birth is correct)

• NOTE: There was an error in the Bradford County Pennsylvania History--Lydia "Lucy" Grover died in Orwell township Pennsylvania on October 11, 1819. She actually did travel there with her husband, as to which is detailed in the Hartford Courant death notice in the issue of 23 November 1819. Hezekiah had some issues in the congregational Church; records of which show that he and his wife were members as of 9/18/1800...Then excommunicated April of 1813.
